(WASHINGTON D.C., 12/31/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the resignation of a Louisiana judge who repeatedly used the N-word in a video recorded at her home.
Lafayette City Court Michelle Odinet had been on unpaid leave of absence since the video surfaced. Earlier this month, CAIR welcomed her formal suspension while an investigation took place.

CAIR Welcomes Formal Suspension of Louisiana Judge Over Racist Video
“We welcome this resignation as a clear sign that racism will no longer be ignored, tolerated or excused in our legal system,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No judge who holds racist or bigoted views should be deciding the legal fate of members of a diverse population.”
Hooper noted that last year, CAIR welcomed the resignation of another Louisiana judge who used racial slurs to refer to government employees.

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
