CAIR Welcomes SCOTUS Ruling in Favor of Black Voters in Alabama Redistricting Case

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/8/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case.

In a 5-4 ruling, the court affirmed a lower-court ruling that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act in an Alabama congressional map. The court determined that Alabama concentrated Black voters in one district and spread them out in other districts to make it impossible for them to elect a candidate of their choice.

“Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act remains as important as ever during an age in which politicians use suppression and technology to dilute the voices of minorities and insulate themselves from the will of the people,” said CAIR Trial Attorney Justin Sadowsky. “We are pleased that the Supreme Court beat back this attempt to neutralize Section 2.”

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision, which sends a signal to state governments that they should no longer expect to get away with blatantly flouting the Voting Rights Act, gerrymandering legislative maps, or suppressing minority voters.”

Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
