CAIR Welcomes State Department Report Highlighting Religious Persecution in India, China

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 5/16/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the U.S. State Department’s highlighting of religious persecution in India and China in its latest report.

The State Department recently released its 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom, which expressed concern regarding the treatment of Muslims, Christians and other religious minorities in India and highlighted violence by law enforcement and pro-government Hindu nationalists targeting Muslims. The report also highlighted the persecution of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minority groups by the Chinese government.

“We welcome this latest report highlighting the deeply concerning persecution and violence targeting Muslims, Christians and other religious minority communities in India and China,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor. “When he visits in June, India’s Prime Minister should find his relentless bigotry has resulted in the Biden administration naming India as a country of particular concern.”

He noted that CAIR recently welcomed the release of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom’s (USCIRF) “2023 Annual Report” by calling on the State Department to follow the commission’s recommendations by finally designating India as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
