CAIR Welcomes Stay of Execution for Alabama Muslim Inmate Over Request for Imam

(MONTGOMERY, AL, 2/6/2019) – The Alabama chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Alabama) today welcomed a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals to grant a stay of execution for Muslim inmate of Domineque “Hakim” Ray in Alabama due to his request to have an Islamic religious leader, or imam, present at his execution.

Last week, CAIR-Alabama issued a statement in support of Ray’s request. Ray says the absence of an imam with him in the death chamber would violate his constitutional rights because the state has included a Christian prison chaplain at previous executions.

“We welcome this decision and hope Mr. Ray will ultimately be provided equal access to spiritual guidance,” said Ali Massoud, government affairs coordinator for CAIR-Alabama.

At Ray’s request, the state recently agreed to not have a Christian prison chaplain present as is customary for inmates on death row. But officials have refused to allow a religious leader from his faith community to be at his side during the execution. A judge is expected to rule on the issue today.
