CAIR Welcomes Va. School’s Confederate Name Change, Condemns N.C. Rep.’s Racist Tweet, Confederate Flag Intimidation in Idaho

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/9/2020) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by a Virginia school to change its Confederate name and condemned racist incidents in North Carolina and Idaho.  

In Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Confederate flags popped up in yards Thursday along with unsigned letter claiming Democrats are racist. Someone also stole Biden-Harris campaign and Black Lives Matter signs from yards.

In North Carolina, Rep. Greg Murphy’s tweeted: “@KamalaHarris is a walking disaster…she was only picked for her color and her race…is that how we pick our leaders now in America?? QT @Mike_Pence:”

In northern Virginia, the Fairfax County School Board voted Thursday to change the name of Mosby Woods Elementary School. The school was named after Confederate John Singleton Mosby and will be renamed before the start of the next school year.

“We must all repudiate acts and symbols of anti-Black racism and white supremacy whenever and wherever they occur,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Every action rejecting symbols of bigotry must be applauded and encouraged.”  

Yesterday, CAIR expressed support for a proposed amendment on the November ballot to remove racist language from the Alabama constitution.

The American Muslim community and CAIR are standing in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and white supremacy.
