(WASHINGTON D.C., 5/18/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the sentencing of a Wisconsin man convicted of throwing acid in the face of another man in a bias-motivated attack.
Clifton Blackwell, 64, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted last month of first-degree reckless injury as a hate crime for throwing acid in the face of Peruvian immigrant who is a U.S. citizen in 2019. Blackwell called the victim “an illegal” and told him to go back to his country.

“We welcome the sentencing in this disturbing case and hope the punishment sends the message that bigotry will not be tolerated or excused in Wisconsin or anywhere in our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper noted that CAIR recently responded to other hate incidents in Wisconsin.
