Christian, Children’s Author Win CAIR’s Anti-Islamophobia Instagram Contests

se7enfast(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/12/15) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today announced a Christian woman and a Muslim children’s author won a recent Instagram photo contests soliticing creative ways ordinary people can respond to rising Islamophobia.

CAIR announced the contests in conjunction with the launch its new Instagram account – @CAIR_National – and offered an Apple Watch and an iPad Mini for the most creative responses to the prompt, “Here is what I am doing to challenge Islamophobia.â€

The Apple Watch went to Omar Khawaja of Virginia, the author of children’s books, such as “Ilyas & Duck: Fantastic Festival of Eid-Al-Fitr,†highlighting Islamic themes.

CAIR awarded the iPad Mini to a Christian woman in Illinois who started SE7ENFAST, which invites Christians, Jews and “anyone else†to fast in solidarity with Muslims during Ramadan.

The website (http://www.se7enfast.com) states:

“The purpose of SE7ENFAST is to break down the dividing walls that exist in our own communities around racial and religious lines and encourage all people to walk on the straight path of peace in our communities as well as worldwide.â€

“We congratulate the winners and thank all those who submitted their ideas for challenging the rising tide of Islamophobia in our society,†said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “We will consider these ideas as we work to promote mutual understanding between people of all faiths and backgrounds.â€

Awad added: “Islamophobia is threatening the fabric of our society. We welcome the partnership with our friends in other faiths to promote peace, unity and harmony over division and hatred.â€
