(WASHINGTON, DC, 9/6/2023) – On Thursday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. Eastern, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, plans to host a community briefing on Facebook to discuss its updated Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices other back-to-school issues.
CAIR’s guide contains information on Islamic religious practices, dietary needs, as well as tips on curriculum issues and family life sex education. Its focus is on K-12 settings.

In April, CAIR reported that community complaints about school incidents increased by 63 percent in 2022. Complaints in K-12 settings can include bullying, the use of Islamophobic classroom materials, and denial of religious accommodations. After reporting on the increasing incidents, CAIR undertook an update and review of the educator’s guide, which was originally produced in 2005, to assist in efforts to prevent the types of incidents that lead to complaints. The current version builds on text authored by staff at CAIR-Oklahoma.

In recent months, CAIR called on a New York High school to restore girls-only swimming classes. The school requires a one-semester swim class by the end of sophomore year, eliminating the class forces Muslim female students to choose between not meeting the requirements for graduation or violating religious modesty requirements. The organization also filed of a civil rights complaint against Baltimore, Maryland’s Academy for College & Career Exploration for an alleged assault and bullying of Afghan children by staff and students.
