Although federal law requires a decision within 120 days of the naturalization interview, these plaintiffs have been waiting for more than a year – and some for up to four years – since successfully completing the citizenship interview. Without citizenship, many of these plaintiffs are separated from family members abroad, and all are unable to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Although these plaintiffs have been law-abiding members of their communities for years, they have been told that their applications are delayed due to background or name checks required by Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS).
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
FIAC is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the basic human rights of immigrants of all nationalities.
