ISIS Targets U.S. Cities, Muslim Civil Rights Group CAIR in New Video

CAIR logo(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/28/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said a video released on Sunday by the ISIS (Daesh) terror group makes threats against San Francisco and Las Vegas, while praising the Orlando nightclub shooter and condemning American Muslim groups like CAIR that denounced the killings.

The ISIS video shows images from recent CAIR press conferences held in Florida and Washington, D.C., to condemn the Orlando massacre and also attacks the Washington-based civil rights group as among “those who claim to be Muslims.†Narration in the video claims ISIS is “not harmed by those [CAIR and American Muslims] who disagree with them and disappointed them.â€

“ISIS targets American Muslim community groups, such as CAIR, because we stand against their messages of anti-Islamic hate and extremism,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. “Now is the time for public figures and elected officials to stand with American Muslims threatened by ISIS for speaking out against their terror campaign.â€

In April, CAIR called on federal and state law enforcement authorities to offer protection to American Muslims, including CAIR’s National Executive Director Nihad Awad, on a hit list of Muslim leaders in the West published today by ISIS. CAIR’s Awad was pictured in the article about the hit list, but was not named specifically.

CAIR and Awad have come to the attention of ISIS because of CAIR’s repeated condemnation of the terror group and terrorism in general, and because Awad coordinated the release of a 2014 open letter signed by more than 120 international scholars of Islam and Muslim leaders refuting ISIS’s ideology.

In a commentary published on, Awad wrote:

“Despite misappropriating and misusing the name ‘Islamic State,’ ISIS is little more than a criminal gang that attaches itself like a leech to revered symbols of Islam.â€

Nihad Awad: ISIS Is Not Just Un-Islamic, It Is Anti-Islamic

CAIR, along with the Fiqh Council of North America and a number of national and local Muslim scholars and leaders, released that letter at a National Press Club news conference in Washington, D.C.
