(COLUMBIA, MO, 5/31/2018) – Race Matters and the Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Missouri) today condemned a hate-filled rant targeting a Muslim woman driver in Columbia, Mo., on May 26.
CAIR-Missouri is also calling on the law enforcement authorities to investigate the incident for any criminal violations that may have occurred.
The Muslim driver, who is of Middle Eastern heritage and wears an Islamic head scarf (hijab), reports that the person in the other vehicle tried to block her car, threw objects in her direction and allegedly passed her illegally across double lines.
When the Muslim woman pulled alongside the other vehicle and confronted the driver, he shouted that “I was a Nazi,” asked “are you a freaking Islamic,” referred to her hijab and mocked the Islamic greeting of peace in Arabic, “as-salaamu alaykum” (peace be upon you). The woman reported the incident to local police but has not heard back from investigators.
“We are calling for the public’s help in identifying the man in the video and are requesting a full investigation by law enforcement authorities,” said CAIR-Missouri Executive Director Faizan Syed Faizan Syed.
“These kinds of complaints are not uncommon,” said Traci Wilson-Kleekamp president of Race Matters. “It’s unacceptable that people of color are increasingly on high alert and are now forced to videotape their experiences.”
CAIR said it has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
Community members are being urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR’s Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
