TN: Mosque Attack a Throwback Act of Cowardice

"Race relations are not doing well in America. Residentially and especially educationally, we are resegregating. Incidents of racial harassment in the workplace have been climbing. The number of hate groups has shot up 40 percent in six years.

"The events in Jena (La.) and their aftermath should serve as a reminder that racial demons still haunt us as a nation. As much as we might like to think that the dark days of the past are over, the racial wounds that have long afflicted our country are still open. If we ignore them, they will fester and may even grow worse.''

Authorities said three men, who have reportedly told authorities they follow a racist fundamental movement, painted swastikas and phrases such as "white power'' on the small mosque and then set it afire.

"The firebombing of the mosque was a sinister, evil and cowardly act,'' James M. Cavanaugh, a special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told an Associated Press reporter on Tuesday. (MORE)
