VT: Group Seeks Anti-Al-Jazeera Referendum

Rebuffed by two city committees, a group that wants to get Al-Jazeera English off the city's cable television system is seeking to put the matter to voters in a referendum.

The Defenders Council of Vermont, which says its mission is to "support our armed services and educate Vermont's citizens about the nature, reality, and threat of radical Islam," maintains that the Qatar-based network spews hatred against the United States.

Backers of keeping it on the air say its detractors exaggerate its faults and that it's healthy for citizens of a democracy to have access to a range of views.

The Defenders Council says it is working with some Burlington residents to get enough signatures on a petition to get the matter on the ballot for the November election.
