Deputy Director

Position Summary:

CAIR-WA is seeking a passionate and talented Deputy Director with interest and experience in non-profits. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from staff and project management to administration and human capital. The Deputy Director will partner closely with the ED to chart CAIR-WA’s future growth and strategic responses to an ever-increasing demand for our organization’s services.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and management to develop an integrated vision and strategy at CAIR-WA.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with the ED on the progress toward organizational goals and report on relevant matters on a regular basis.
  • Collaborate with staff, evaluate programs, and maintain and participate in various community outreach activities.
  • Develop and implement financial campaign strategies to diversify and cultivate new sources of revenue and increase donor-base by attracting new donors and increasing contributions from existing donors.
  • Oversee fundraising planning and implementation, including the development and maintenance of contacts with key funding sources, and collaborate with the Executive Director to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Maintain and enhance existing relationships and develop new strategic relations with external parties including local Muslim communities, other community-based organizations and stakeholders, and interfaith leaders through coalition building.
  • Maintain a regular presence within the community by regularly attending Jummah services at mosques around the greater Seattle area.

  • Excellent research, oral, and written communication to interface with media professionals, community leaders, government officials, and staff in a professional and effective manner.
  • Familiarity, cultural competency, and experience engaging with Muslim audiences.
  • Commitment to the civil rights challenges facing Muslim and American Muslim communities.
  • Highly motivated, self-initiating and energetic. Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines; must be able to work well both independently and in a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of distinguished years in a senior management position in a nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency
  • Familiarity with civil rights issues impacting the Muslim community
  • Demonstrated leadership, personnel management, and time management abilities.
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.
  • Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people from diverse backgrounds
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings

Compensation:

Community Organizer

CAIR-Washington is seeking a passionate and talented individual to join the Policy Team as a Community Organizer. The Community Organizer will work as part of the Advocacy team to lead engagement and education campaigns and mobilize community members for political participation. As a Community Organizer with CAIR-WA, you will join one of the most dynamic teams defending civil rights on behalf of Washington’s Muslim community, promoting civic engagement, and building coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop organizing campaigns around key legal, policy, and advocacy issues
  • Represent CAIR-WA in coalition meetings and work collaboratively on joint efforts with community organizations and coalition partners
  • Develop strategic partnerships with community-based organizations working in diverse communities across Washington
  • Speak publicly on behalf of CAIR-WA at rallies, town halls, and mosque events
  • Develop, conduct, and widely publicize Know Your Rights trainings that promote grassroots leadership, strategic issue campaigns, organizing, and coalition building on priority issue areas
  • Galvanize support of community organizations, public officials, faith leaders, business leaders, donors, and new and diverse communities for organizing campaigns
  • Work collaboratively with grassroots leaders, allies, and the CAIR-WA Advocacy team to execute large and effective community events and actions (legal clinics, public hearings, protests, vigils, etc.)
  • Identify, cultivate, and develop strong community leaders who will lead campaigns that pursue CAIR-WA’s policy and advocacy priorities
  • Identify, recruit, and train CAIR-WA volunteers to participate in civil liberties and social justice campaigns and programs
  • Coordinate and execute Voter Registration, GOTV and Ballot Initiative campaigns in affiliate areas
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or four years of experience in base building, membership
  • Experience in community organizing
  • Experience in base building, volunteer recruitment, and leadership and strategy development
  • Passion for CAIR’s mission and values
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, organizing, and communication skills
  • Ballot initiative or electoral campaign experience highly preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed individual, strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple ongoing initiatives
  • Familiarity, knowledge and experience in working with the American Muslim community
  • Work experience with a non-profit organization or in a related field
  • Willingness and flexibility to change job requirements as the team grows
  • Valid automobile driver’s license and working vehicle required; this position will involve extensive travel throughout Washington state. Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule including nights and weekends.

Chief of Staff

Primary Roles & Responsibilities

  • Oversee and provide strategic leadership for continued growth and development in the day to day operations and management of the organization.
  • Ensure that department staff members and projects have clearly defined roles, goals, and systems for managing the work effectively.
  • Partner with the ED in essential internal leadership activities (human resources, administration, and organizational planning).
  • Support the ED in the strategic planning, development, and execution of an annual operational plan and milestones to achieve the strategic goals.
  • Research, prepare, and follow-up on foundation, corporate, and government grant proposals.
  • Manage segments of information technology, human resources (recruiting, reviews, staff deployment/workload balancing, career progression) with related internal communications and budgeting/finance duties.
  • Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
  • Prepare program goals and objectives and evaluate progress and effectiveness of all staff and provide support to achieve project deliverables within required timeframes.

Position Summary:

CAIR-WA is seeking an attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy and serving diverse communities. We are looking for a motivated individual with a strong passion for public interest law and experience in representing discriminated individuals in front of administrative bodies/tribunals and courts. The candidate will be expected to identify, strategize, and use creative legal and grassroots advocacy solutions to address systematic issues facing the American Muslim community.

Practice Areas: Civil Rights/Civil Liberties (Religious Freedom), Employment, Immigration, National Security, and Police Practices.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

· Work closely with the Executive Director and the Advocacy team to develop an integrated vision and strategy for the legal and policy department.

· Oversee legal intake process, case selection, case staffing, provide mentorship, and ensure ongoing professional development of department staff.

· Develop and supervise the legal team through all phases of litigation, including community education and outreach, identifying clients, case development, drafting pleadings and briefs, engaging in all aspects of discovery, and oral argument.

· Serve as a spokesperson with the media, testify before policymaking bodies, and present at other public speaking engagements that further CAIR-WA’s mission and legal strategies.

· Build, manage, and maintain relationships with clients, affected communities, elected officials, law firms, law schools and legal clinics, allied legal groups, and other key stakeholders to advance the organization’s legal and policy work.

· Engage with local, state, and federal government officials.

Skills & Abilities:

· Solid track record of litigation experience, including developing cases, pre-trial and trial stages, and zealous advocacy with meaningful results.

· Excellent research, oral, and written communication to interface with media professionals, community leaders, government officials, and staff in a professional and effective manner.

· An understanding of civil rights and immigration issues impacting Muslims in America.

· Familiarity, cultural competency, and experience engaging with Muslim audiences.

· Commitment to the civil rights challenges facing Muslim and American Muslim communities.

· Highly motivated, self-initiating and energetic. Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines; must be able to work well both independently and in a team environment.

· Sophisticated political judgment, understanding of legislative issues and policies both locally and nationally.

Qualifications:

· At least 4 years of litigation experience

· Qualified to practice law in Washington State

· Familiarity with civil rights issues impacting the Muslim community
