Founded in 1994, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is America's leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. CAIR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with its national headquarters located two blocks from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. CAIR has 30 chapters across the country.
CAIR takes a multi-pronged approach to pervasive civil rights violations, including legal advocacy, civic engagement, coalition building, media, research, community outreach, and education.
CAIR's mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
West Virginia State Director
The West Virginia State Director will manage CAIR’s civil rights and advocacy work in West Virginia. Tasks include community relations & organizing, media & civic engagement advocacy, delivering programs, and fundraising.
Primary duties include:
- Organize public forums, media events, civic engagement efforts, educational events and campaigns for community empowerment
- Establish and execute an annual fundraising plan, including seeking funds from private and corporate foundations, government grants, private donors and other potential sources; establish and maintain professional working relationships with potential and current funders and individual donors
- Interface and build relationships with local community members, media, elected officials, community leaders, and others
- Assist in resolving civil rights discrimination complaints
- Oversee local office operations and supervise interns, and volunteers
- Develop and disseminate local news releases, newsletters, and action alerts
- Coordinate the maintenance and upkeep of the office facility
- Other duties as assigned
All CAIR staff, whether permanent or temporary, are required to assist in general duties such as answering of phones, assisting with office management and cleanup, assisting with special projects such as conferences, conventions, mass mailing, and other CAIR events. CAIR employees may be asked to participate in events outside of normal business hours as instructed by CAIR Management.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Demonstrated leadership, management, time-management and multi-tasking abilities
- Nonprofit fundraising experience, including knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies
- Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments and meet deadlines; must be able to work well both independently and in a team environment
- Passion for the mission of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
- A proactive disposition showing interpersonal skills; superior communication (both verbal and written); core computer skills
- Experience offering presentations to audiences and donors
- An understanding of civil rights issues relating to American Muslims
- Bachelor's degree or higher in related field
- Previous or current CAIR experience highly preferred
