(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/20/2019) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for hate crime charges after a 14-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle in an apparent racist attack in Iowa.
A woman has been charged with attempted murder after she told officers she intentionally ran over the girl because she believed the teen was “Mexican.”

“We condemn this act of violence allegedly targeting a young girl because she was perceived to be part of the Latino community and call on law enforcement authorities to consider bringing hate crime charges in the case,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Along with other minority communities, members of the Latino community have increasingly been targeted by hatred and discrimination in the current toxic political environment.”
He noted that CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.
