(PHOENIX, AZ, 12/27/2021) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Arizona) today called for stepped-up security for the Islamic Center of Tucson following a weekend assault and vandalism at the mosque.
On the morning of December 25, two men were reportedly assaulted by a group of people as they were walking into the Islamic Center of Tucson for morning prayers. The assault left one of the men with a black eye. After the men retreated into the mosque, two women from the group smashed one of the mosque’s windows. Mosque security camera video revealed that the group had been hanging around the parking lot for several hours prior to the assault. Police are investigating the incident and have not made any arrests.

In a statement, CAIR-Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:
“We call on law enforcement authorities to step up security in the area of the mosque impacted by this disturbing incident and at all mosques and other houses of worship statewide. With violent incidents targeting minority communities around the country, this attack must be taken seriously.”
She urged houses of worship to take extra security precautions using CAIR “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet. The advice in CAIR’s security publication is applicable to religious institutions of all faiths.
