CAIR Welcomes President Biden’s Historic Nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to U.S. Supreme Court

Civil rights group encourages senators to focus on Judge Jackson’s views regarding civil rights law, religious freedom, presidential power

(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/25/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed President Biden’s historic nomination of federal appeals court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Jackson would be the first African-American woman to serve on the Court.

CAIR encouraged senators to use Judge Jackson’s confirmation hearing to probe her legal perspective on issues related to civil rights, religious freedom, and the limits of presidential power, particularly in relation to immigration.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome President Biden’s historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Jackson’s personal and professional experiences, including her work as a public defender, could enrich the court. We encourage senators who participate in the confirmation process to ask Judge Jackson about her legal views on civil rights law, religious freedom and the limits of presidential power.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
