(CANTON, MI 05/31/2022) – The Michigan chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on law enforcement to conduct a ‘robust’ investigation into a recent shooting at a mosque in Detroit.
On the morning of Sunday May 29, worshippers came to morning prayer at Masjid Ar-Rahma in Westside Detroit and noticed that there was broken glass from a bullet hole in a window in the prayer sanctuary and another bullet hole on an outside wall close by. Mosque officials called the Detroit Police and claimed that when police arrived at the scene, they declined to look at surveillance camera video which showed the shooting of the mosque.
A CAIR-MI official went to the mosque and viewed the video showing a dark colored vehicle that pulled up to a corner of the mosque around 3:40 a.m. and fired shots before speeding off. Based on the time of the video, the shooting took place approximately 15 minutes prior to worshippers arriving at the mosque for the morning prayer.
“We call on law enforcement officials to use their full resources to conduct a robust investigation into the recent shooting at the mosque in Westside Detroit,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “Community members should not only feel safe to pray in their houses of worship but should also feel that law enforcement takes shootings at such locations with the utmost seriousness.”
Walid also stated that CAIR-MI is offering a $1,000 reward for information which leads to an arrest and conviction in this matter.
