(HARTFORD, CT, 6/1/2022) – The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Connecticut) today condemned several racist incidents that allegedly occurred in Suffield County schools.
Last Friday, members of the Suffield Race Relations Coalition held a rally to share their personal experiences of racism within the school system. One parent alleged that her daughter witnessed a student yelling the n-word during a virtual class while the teacher was online. The incident reportedly went on for 7 minutes. When the parent informed the superintendent, principal and teacher of the incident, the teacher allegedly initially denied that it happened before admitting to having been negligent. No action was reportedly taken over the incident.
Another coalition member alleged that a student was called the n-word in class in the presence of the teacher and other students. The coalition also alleged that a second grader told her school psychologist she didn’t want to live anymore because students bullied her for her skin color. Suffield’s superintendent and Board of Education vowed to respond to the incidents.
“Students of all backgrounds deserve to feel safe and welcome in school, and it is essential that educators and administrators combat racism and bigotry on campus,” said CAIR-Connecticut Board Chair Farhan Memon. “We condemn these incidents and hope the Board of Education fulfills their promise to address them.”
