(NEW YORK, NY, 8/10/2022)—The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today denounced an allegedly racist assault on a woman during a subway ride in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Monday morning.
According to police, the victim boarded the northbound Q train at the Newkirk Avenue station in Park Slope, Brooklyn at approximately 8:45 am, sat down, and proceeded to use her phone. The alleged perpetrator sat beside her, then suddenly stood up and began punching the victim in the face several times.
The stunned victim, now bleeding as a result of the assault, asked the alleged perpetrator why she had attacked her, to which she allegedly replied, “I hate Mexicans.” The NYPD is searching for the alleged assailant and is investigating this incident as a hate crime.

Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, said in a statement:
“It is despicable enough to hate someone because they are of a different race or ethnicity, but to punch them repeatedly because of it is absolutely unconscionable. New York is a city of immigrants, and like all other New Yorkers, Mexican-Americans – and those perceived to be Mexican-American – deserve to live in peace and not be subjected to such cruelty. We are relieved that the victim has recovered and look forward to her alleged attacker being brought to justice.”
She added that CAIR-NY and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging racial supremacy, religious bigotry, xenophobia, and all other forms of hatred.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (English), 1-888-57-PISTA (Spanish), or via their website at http://crimestoppers.nypdonline.org.
