CAIR Welcomes N.H. Hate Crime Probe of Assault, Harassment Targeting South Asian Students, Civil Rights Charges for Racist Messages Targeting Black Student

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/21/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a hate crime investigation into an assault targeting a group of South Asian students on the campus of New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College.

CAIR also welcomed civil rights charges brought against two New Hampshire teens who allegedly targeted a Black student with hateful and threatening messages.

Police in Hanover, N.H., submitted an alleged hate crime for review by the state’s Department of Justice. The crime reportedly occurred on Saturday when a man allegedly assaulted a Pakistani student after harassing him and three Indian students with racial slurs. Police have declined to release the suspect’s name pending charges.

According to the New Hampshire Department of Justice, two teens reportedly wrote and carved racist and threatening messages into a New Hampshire high school in April. One of the 17-year-old boys allegedly carved a threatening message with a racist slur and the name of the Black student at John Stark Regional High School in Weare, N.H. The incident is being treated as a violation of the state’s Civil Rights Act.

“Acts of racist violence and intimidation cannot be tolerated in educational institutions and must be dealt with appropriately by academic officials and law enforcement authorities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome both the hate crime investigation into the disturbing attack reportedly targeting South Asian students at Dartmouth and the civil rights charges for the alleged racist threats targeting a Black high school student.”

He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
