(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/21/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed stepped-up security at an Alabama fair targeted by a social media post threatening to kill Black people who attend the event next month.
Opelika, Ala., police are investigating the threat against the Lee County Fair and are providing extra officers for the event next month as a security measure. Police are attempting to identify the poster who threatened that he and his friends “are coming to [the] Opelika Alabama fair to kill every N*GRO that we lay eye contact on so be prepared. WHITE POWER.”

“Everyone, regardless of their race, should be able to enjoy public entertainment with their families without threats and intimidation,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We welcome the added police protection for this event and hope it sends a strong message that acts of racist hate will not be tolerated.”
Hooper noted that earlier today, CAIR welcomed a hate crime investigation into an assault targeting a group of South Asian students on the campus of New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College.
CAIR also welcomed civil rights charges brought against two New Hampshire teens who allegedly targeted a Black student with hateful and threatening messages.
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
