CAIR-AZ Calls for ‘Independent and Transparent’ Probe of Police Shooting of Muslim with Mental Health Issues

(PHOENIX, AZ, 9/28/2022) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for a “independent and transparent” investigation of the police shooting of a Muslim man with mental health issues after he reportedly threw rocks at a law enforcement vehicle.

Ali Osman, who was of Somali heritage, was shot and killed Saturday in Phoenix. Police say they told Osman to stop throwing rocks, but he refused. He died of his injuries at the hospital.

A police spokesperson said the department “will release a Critical Incident Briefing Video within 14 days of the incident to the public that will provide facts of the case. In addition, all body worn cameras will be released.”

“Because of the circumstances of this disturbing incident, we call on city officials to conduct an independent and transparent investigation in order to determine whether the actions of the officers were within policy guidelines and the boundaries of the law,” said CAIR Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif.

Abuseif noted that she met with Osman’s family about the shooting.
