CAIR Welcomes Arkansas Judge’s Ruling Allowing Town to Remove Confederate Flag Display

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/29/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a ruling by an Arkansas judge stating that the city of Fort Smith is not required to fly a Confederate flag.

The ruling, which allows Fort Smith to take down the “Flags over Fort Smith” display including a Confederate flag, was handed down in Sebastian County yesterday. The flags will be moved to storage.

Earlier this month, CAIR condemned a decision by the Arkansas Historical Commission to deny the town of Fort Smith’s request to remove the Confederate flag display.

“Every community should have the right to remove symbols of white supremacy, slavery and treason from public spaces,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We welcome the judge’s ruling affirming this right for the city of Fort Smith.”

He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
