CAIR Calls for Removal of Confederate Flag from South Carolina Highway

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/27/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a citation issued by South Carolina’s Spartanburg County against a large Confederate flag flying alongside I-85.

CAIR called for the flag to be removed.

The flag is owned by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A flagpole without a principal use, such as house or business, is not allowed according to Spartanburg County ordinance. The county issued a citation to the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the group has 20 days to either remove the flagpole or obtain a permit for a principal use of the property.

“A flag representing systemic anti-Black racism, slavery and treason should not be flown in public spaces,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We urge county officials to ensure the removal of the flag.”

He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
