CAIR Welcomes Fine, Arrests for Vandalism Targeting Churches in D.C., Maryland

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/2/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed legal action in the cases of vandalism targeting churches in Washington, D.C., and Maryland.

A judge awarded more than $1 million to a Black church in Washington, D.C., that sued the Proud Boys hate group for vandalizing a Black Lives Matter banner during a 2020 protest.

In Maryland, law enforcement authorities filed charges against three people who allegedly vandalized churches in that state’s Anne Arundel County.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:

“Law enforcement authorities must take strong action whenever houses of worship are targeted. People of all faiths should be able to worship without fear of intimidation or violence.”

Hooper noted that CAIR recently call for an investigation of a possible bias motive for repeated vandalism targeting a New Mexico mosque.

He said CAIR is urging religious institutions nationwide to take extra security precautions by using advice offered in CAIR’s booklet, “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety.”  The advice in the booklet is applicable to institutions of all faiths.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
