(BALTIMORE, MD, 7/25/2023) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organizations, today released a new resource guide titled “Families’ Rights & Reasonable Accommodations in Maryland Public Schools,” designed to provide parents and students with information on navigating public school systems and participating in primary and secondary education.
This consolidated guide offers concise information including why engagement with schools matters and where families can access their child’s public school’s policies, procedures, curriculum content and more in one easily accessible document rather than searching across multiple platforms.

“By familiarizing themselves with the content outlined in the guide, families can better advocate for their child’s rights and needs, make informed decisions about their education, and more easily navigate challenges or conflicts that may arise,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “This tool aims to provide a roadmap, reduce barriers to accessibility, improve transparency and accountability on part of school systems, and empower families to actively engage in their child’s educational journey.”
She said that by understanding the various ways they can participate, families can become more involved in their child’s education, build relationships with teachers and staff, and positively contribute to the overall school environment.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
