CAIR-Minnesota to Join Community Groups in Protest Against Rashida Tlaib Censure Vote of Congresswoman Angie Craig

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 11/8/23) – Today, Nov. 8, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) is planning to join other community groups and constituents in protest against the censure vote by Congresswoman Angie Craig. Rep. Craig against her fellow democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib on Tuesday.

Tlaib is being targeted for her support for Palestinian human rights and calling for a ceasefire in response to Israel’s ruthless killing of more than 10,000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, including more than 4,800 children.

In a statement, Jaylani Hussein, Executive Director of CAIR-Minnesota, said:

“We are deeply disappointed to see Congresswoman Angie Craig support a resolution to censure Representative Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress. By aligning with Representative Taylor, who has openly expressed Islamophobic views and denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election, Congresswoman Craig is not only undermining a critical voice for Palestinian human rights but is also engaging in behavior that is dangerously dismissive of the Muslim community in Minnesota.

“This action does not only silence an important perspective in our legislative process but also sets a precedent that puts the safety and representation of Minnesota’s Muslims at risk. At a time when solidarity and understanding are paramount, such measures are a grave step backward. We must stand against attempts to stifle the necessary and valid discourse that Representative Tlaib brings to Congress, especially when it concerns the dignity, safety, and rights of people both here and abroad.”

Earlier today, Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the Michigan chapter of CAIR (CAIR-MI) condemned the House of Representatives for censuring Rep. Tlaib, the lone Muslim Palestinian-American woman in Congress.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
