(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/18/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said the “Israeli genocide must be stopped’ after an attack on a UN school in Gaza killed least 50 people.
Graphic footage showed scores of lifeless bodies following the Israeli attack on al-Fakhoura school, which is run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The school was sheltering hundreds of Palestinian civilians.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the United Nations agency serving Palestinian refugees denounced the Israeli attacks on UN-run schools in Gaza, saying he had seen “horrifying images and footage of scores of people killed and injured” in one of his agency’s schools “sheltering thousands of displaced.”

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“The absolute immunity Israel alone is granted by the Global North to defy international norms and laws of war as it carries out a campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide is resulting in a brutality targeting innocent civilians the world has not witnessed since the Middle Ages.
“The Israeli genocide must be stopped, and our nation’s leaders must listen to those who are stating clearly that there must be an immediate ceasefire and justice for the Palestinian people. A prerequisite for justice is the recognition that the Palestinian people are human beings, not ‘collateral damage’ or animals to be slaughtered at will by an occupying army.”
Hooper added that yesterday, CAIR said the international community must take action as UN agencies report that Palestinians now face starvation, disease, and genocide at the hands of the Israeli government.
He noted that last week, CAIR condemned the killing of at least 50 Palestinians when a mosque in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza was bombed during prayers.
