(WASHINGTON, DC – 12/8/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned an “unconscionable” United States veto of a United Nations Security Council demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Thirteen Security Council members voted in favor of a draft resolution, while Britain abstained.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“It is unconscionable that the Biden administration would stand alone in voting to continue the ethnic cleansing, starvation and genocide being carried out by Israel’s far-right government in Gaza. It is not clear what level of suffering by the Palestinian people would prompt our nation’s leaders to act in their defense.”
Earlier this week, CAIR welcomed the invocation of a rare clause ordering the UN Security Council to meet to discuss an urgent ceasefire in Israel’s ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza.
Israel has killed more than 17,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children in Gaza in recent weeks. Many more have been killed by Israeli occupation forces and illegal settlers in the West Bank.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
