(WASHINGTON, DC – 12/9/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the Biden administration’s use of emergency authority to allow the sale of about 14,000 tank shells to Israel without congressional review as an “affront to democracy and an act of moral insanity.”
In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Rushing deadly weapons to the far-right and openly genocidal Israeli government without congressional review robs American voters of their voice in Congress, emboldens Netanyahu to kill more Palestinian civilians and furthers stains our nation’s standing in the world.
“The timing is also remarkable, as media outlets just confirmed that Israeli tanks deliberately targeted and slaughtered journalists in Lebanon. The Biden administration’s decision is an affront to democracy and an act of moral insanity.”
He also condemned the reported murder by an Israeli sniper of an elderly Palestinian woman previously highlighted on social media who was reportedly born before Israel’s establishment and survived the ethnic cleansing of her home as a child.
Yesterday, CAIR condemned what it called an “unconscionable” United States veto of a United Nations Security Council demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. CAIR also condemned Israel’s “tactic of humiliation” after images were posted online of Palestinian civilians in Gaza – including a journalist – stripped, blindfolded and paraded in public.
Israel has killed almost 18,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children in Gaza in recent weeks. Many more have been killed by Israeli occupation forces and illegal settlers in the West Bank.
