(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/11/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Biden administration to address reporting that the U.S. supplied the Israeli government with white phosphorus used in attacks on civilian areas.
The Washington Post reported that Israel used U.S.-supplied white phosphorus munitions in an October attack in southern Lebanon that injured at least nine civilians. The report is based on an analysis of shell fragments the Post conducted. Amnesty International has said that Israel’s use of white phosphorus constitutes a war crime.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“The Israeli government’s reported use of white phosphorus is a horrific war crime that our nation must condemn, investigate and address. Our nation must also immediately end all material support for the Israeli government’s ongoing human rights abuses against civilians.”
He noted that earlier today, CAIR condemned what it called the latest “Israeli war crime of the day” after video surfaced reportedly showing Israeli forces opening fire on a group of unarmed Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, wounding one of them, and then approaching and executing him.
