The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today applauded the appointment of Councilwoman Shahana Hanif as co-chair of NYC Task Force to combat hate.
Shahana Hanif, the first Bangladeshi and Muslim woman elected to the City Council, will oversee the six-member panel with fellow co-chair Eric Dinowitz.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“We congratulate Councilwoman Shahana Hanif for being the first Muslim Bangladeshi woman to co-chair the City Council’s Task Force to Combat Hate. As a Muslim woman of color, she is in a unique position to combat the hateful experiences of many marginalized communities.”
