CAIR Action Alert: Demand Hate Crime Charges for Suspect Who Threatened ‘Mass Violence’ Against Anti-Genocide Protesters

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today urged community members to sign its action alert demanding hate crime charges against a man who allegedly threatened mass violence against people protesting the Gaza genocide.

SIGN THE ACTION ALERT

Yosef Appelbaum has been charged with threatening to commit mass violence against anti-genocide protesters in Rockville, Maryland. These protesters were reportedly peacefully advocating for an end to the genocide in Gaza, exercising their right to free speech and assembly.

Why This Matters:

Political speech is a fundamental right protected under the First Amendment. However, individuals and organizations advocating for Palestinian rights are increasingly being silenced, labeled, and censored. This not only undermines our democratic values but also stifles important conversations on human rights.

Take Action Now:

Join us to call on the Montgomery County State’s Attorney, John McCarthy, to pursue hate crime charges against Appelbaum. His alleged threats are not only criminal, but also targeted acts of hate designed to silence a specific community to:

1. Ensure equal treatment of all political speech regardless of the viewpoint.

2. Promote transparency in decisions made by social media platforms and other entities regarding content moderation.

3. Protect the rights of individuals and organizations advocating for Palestinian rights and other critical issues.

How You Can Help:

1. Send a Letter: Use our online tool to send a pre-drafted letter to your elected officials, urging them to support policies that protect political speech and prevent unfair censorship.

2. Share This Alert: Amplify our message by sharing this action alert with your friends, family, and social media networks. Use the hashtag #ProtectPoliticalSpeech.

3. Stay Informed: Follow CAIR for updates on this issue and other civil rights matters.
