CAIR Supports Effort to Suspend Israel from UN Over Genocide, Attacks on UN Staff

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed its support for an effort by several countries to suspend the Israeli government from the United Nations General Assembly due its continuing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and attacks on UN staff, both in violation of the UN charter.

Malaysia and several other nations are working on a draft resolution which, if adopted, could potentially suspend Israel from the UN due to its genocide of Palestinians. In 1974, the UN General Assembly suspended South Africa from participating in its work during the apartheid regime.

In a statement, CAIR said:

“Committing a genocide and attacking United Nations staff and peacekeepers are the actions of a rogue pariah state that does not have any regard for the UN charter. Just as the UN General Assembly once suspended South Africa, it is completely appropriate to suspend the Israeli government and other governments committing flagrant human rights violations.

“The United Nations cannot continue to tolerate the Israeli government’s atrocities by allowing it to participate in the community of nations while attacking the UN. The reputation of all international institutions hangs in the balance as the Israeli genocide unfolds with the world watching and doing nothing of substance.”

He noted that CAIR has previously supported efforts at the International Court of Justice to hold the Israeli government accountable for its genocide targeting the Palestinian people.
