CAIR Backs Bill to Remove Confederate Names from Maryland Streets, Highways

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the planned introduction of bill in the state legislature that would change the names of streets and highways honoring soldiers of the Confederacy.

Washington County Delegate Brooke Grossman said she will introduce her bill in the upcoming session of the Maryland General Assembly that would rename streets such as Robert E. Lee Drive in Sharpsburg, Maryland.

“We welcome the planned introduction of this bill and hope state legislatures nationwide will follow Delegate Grossman’s example in seeking to remove remnants of the racist Confederacy from public spaces,” said CAIR Office in Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry.

She added that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
