CAIR Maryland Thanks WJZ-TV Team, Community Partners for Successful Conclusion of Part One of the ANCHOR Project: A Step Toward Empowering Muslim Youth in Journalism

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today thanked the WJZ-TV team in Baltimore and other community partners for the successful conclusion of Part One of its groundbreaking initiative, the “ANCHOR Project: Immersive Journalism for Empowered Youth Voices.”

Highlight Reel

The first segment of this three-part series, held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, provided two dozen selected applicants with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of WJZ-TV, a CBS Television Stations subsidiary. Muslim students explored the newsroom, weather station, and control room, asking thought-provoking questions and gaining invaluable insight into how television news is produced.

Highlights of Part One:

  • Newsroom Tour: Students learned how stories are packaged for production and observed the fast-paced operations of a professional newsroom.
  • Weather Station: Participants explored the technology and techniques used to deliver accurate weather forecasts.
  • Control Room: Students observed the behind-the-scenes coordination necessary for live broadcasts.

The ANCHOR Project is designed to motivate and encourage young American Muslims with a passion for storytelling to consider careers in journalism. This initiative seeks to address underrepresentation in media by equipping participants with practical skills, leadership development, and access to mentors in the field.

The project’s goals include:

Dates for Parts Two and Three of the initiative will be announced soon. While participation in all three parts is encouraged to maximize the benefits of this immersive experience, it is not mandatory.
