CAIR Congratulates Montgomery County Muslims on Designation of January as ‘Muslim American Heritage Month’, Calls on Governor Moore to Issue a Statewide Declaration

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today congratulated the Montgomery County Muslim community on the County Council’s official designation of January as ‘Muslim American Heritage Month.’ The civil rights group is calling on Governor Wes Moore to follow the example of states like Michigan, North Carolina and New Jersey by issuing a statewide declaration.

Montgomery County’s proclamation, presented yesterday at a ceremony in the Council chambers attended by CAIR’s Maryland director and many local leaders, acknowledges the achievements, resilience, and rich heritage of the local Muslim community. It serves as an important step in fostering inclusivity, understanding, and unity within the region.

“We thank the Montgomery County Council for this notable gesture in honoring the contributions of Muslim Americans. This recognition not only celebrates our community’s diverse heritage but also challenges stereotypes and promotes mutual respect” said CAIR Maryland’s Outreach Coordinator, Kimberly Syuardi. “We now urge Governor Wes Moore to follow suit and designate January as Muslim American Heritage Month statewide. Such a declaration would further demonstrate Maryland’s commitment to inclusivity and equality.”

CAIR calls on Marylanders to join in advocating for a statewide recognition, which would highlight the vibrant contributions of Muslim Americans across education, healthcare, business, public service, and the arts. A statewide designation would also encourage schools, organizations, and government institutions to engage in educational initiatives that promote a deeper understanding of Muslim American history and culture.

CAIR continues to support and amplify the voices of local communities seeking similar recognition in other counties and states nationwide. The organization is committed to working with elected officials, interfaith leaders, and community advocates to ensure that the rich and diverse heritage of Muslim Americans is celebrated and protected.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
