CAIR Urges Pres-Elect Trump to Force Netanyahu to Uphold Ceasefire Deal

Muslim civil rights and advocacy group also condemns Israel’s “cruel surge” in deadly attacks on Gaza after ceasefire announcement

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President-Elect Trump to demand that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stop attempting to sabotage and back out of the ceasefire deal announced yesterday by Trump, President Biden, Qatar and other parties to the agreement. CAIR also condemned the Israeli government’s “cruel” surge in deadly attacks on Gaza after the announcement of the ceasefire.

In a statement, CAIR said:

“We call on President-Elect Trump to demand that Benjamin Netanyahu stop these transparent and predictable attempts to sabotage the ceasefire-and-hostage deal announced yesterday. The long overdue agreement that President-Elect Trump helped secure is only hours old, but the indicted war criminal Netanyahu and his cabinet of racist warmongers are already trying to sabotage the deal. Netanyahu’s attempt to undermine the deal is an insult to President-Elect Trump, President Biden, and the other parties who announced the deal yesterday.

“We also strongly condemn Israel’s indicted war criminal government for unleashing a cruel surge in attacks on Gaza after the announcement of the ceasefire, killing at least 77 Palestinian men, women and children. We do not expect anything whatsoever from President Biden after over a year of failing to hold Netanyahu accountable, so we encourage President-elect Trump to force the Israeli government to stop this madness and fulfill its commitments before more innocent people die.”

Netanyahu’s offie has has said its Cabinet will not meet to approve the ceasefire and hostage release deal, claiming the Palestinian side was creating a “last-minute crisis.” Netanyahu’s office did not elaborate on the claimed issue. Israel’s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said “this is the time to continue with all our might, to occupy and cleanse the entire strip and to open the gates of hell” on Gaza. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said “the deal that is being formed is terrible, [it] effectively erases the war achievements.” At least 77 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the announcement of the ceasefire.
