Community Alert: What You Need to Know About Trump’s New Travel Ban Order

Assalamu alaikum,

We write to share updates and guidance about the newly expanded Muslim and African Ban. Yesterday, President Trump issued an order blocking or restricting new immigration or travel entry into the United States for citizens of 19 countries who do not already have U.S. legal status—mostly from Muslim-majority and African nations. It is scheduled to take effect at 12:01 am Eastern on June 9.

What to know about Trump’s order to restrict travel from 19 countries – Washington Post

Who Is Affected

This order:

  • Fully suspends new immigrants and new travelers from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and others.
  • Partially suspends new entry from seven additional countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, Laos, and Sierra Leone.
  • Applies only to individuals who are outside the U.S. on June 9 and do not already have a valid visa.

If You Are Abroad Right Now

  • If you are from one of the listed countries and already have a valid U.S. visa, this order does not apply to you.
  • If you are a green card holder or a dual national traveling with a passport from a non-banned country, the order does not apply to you.
  • That said, if you are eligible to enter, we urge you to return to the U.S. as soon as possible before the ban takes effect.
  • You should travel with your valid visa or green card and bring documents showing your U.S. ties, such as school enrollment, job letters, or lease agreements.

If You Are Inside the U.S.

  • The order does not change your legal status or impact you if you are already inside the U.S. and have a valid visa.
  • If you are from a listed country and do not have permanent status, we advise against international travel for the time being to be safe.
  • If you are undocumented or fear future enforcement, reach out for a legal consultation and Know Your Rights resources.

We’re Here to Support You

If you or your loved ones are affected, please contact us through our online intake system. We can help you assess travel risks, legal guidance, and provide updates as the situation evolves.

Although this new travel ban contains numerous exceptions and is not as extreme as the original versions that President Trump tried to implement during his first term, it is still an unnecessary, overbroad and ideologically motivated policy that undermines our nation’s values.

We stood up against the Muslim Ban during President Trump’s first presidency, and we will stand up against any injustice caused by this new travel ban as well, insha’Allah.

Sincerely,

Your CAIR Team
