On July 9, Rep. Fine launched another public attack—this time smearing a Muslim member of Congress who criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s war crimes against Palestinian civilians in Gaza: “I’m sure it is difficult to see us welcome the killer of so many of your fellow Muslim terrorists. The only shame is that you serve in Congress.”

This is part of a long pattern of threatening, racist, and bigoted rhetoric. In May, Fine responded to warnings of famine in Gaza with “#StarveAway.” In April, he told Reps. Tlaib and Omar to “consider leaving [Congress] before I get there. #BombsAway.” On Fox News, he said, “We nuked the Japanese twice. That needs to be the same here.” He even celebrated the image of a dead Palestinian baby.

Fine’s rhetoric is part of a larger wave of open Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism in Congress over the past two years, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) reportedly making anti-Muslim comments about American faith leaders in a closed-door caucus meeting.
  • Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) mocking a Muslim state lawmaker’s cultural eating practices, writing, “Civilized people in America don’t eat like this… Go back to the Third World.”
  • Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) claiming that “There are very few innocent Palestinian civilians,” likening them to Nazis.
  • Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) recently saying that people from blue states were not welcome in Alabama if they brought a “communist, Islamic atmosphere.”

This is more than hateful speech—it is dangerous incitement. It threatens the safety of entire communities, erodes democratic norms, and has gone largely unpunished.

House Democratic Leader Jeffries, Whip Clark, and Chair Aguilar did issue a statement condemning Fine’s latest slur. That was a necessary first step—but it must be followed by real accountability.
