CAIR-NY: Columbia’s fight against antisemitism should not come at the expense of free speech or Muslim students – Columbia Spectator

And while Columbia’s leadership focuses immense attention on combatting antisemitism—as it should—it has done little to address the documented discrimination faced by Muslim and Arab students. Civil rights organizations like the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations have condemned the University administration for fostering a “hostile environment,” citing the suspension of Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace, as well as Columbia’s platforming of speakers known for anti-Muslim rhetoric.

In a statement to Newsweek, CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw said, in part, “The Trump administration’s demand that American cities and states threatened by natural disasters must not boycott Israeli companies involved in war crimes in order to receive federal support is patently unconstitutional and un-American.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights group, is also condemning the group’s message.

“Even bigots have the right to free speech, but everyone else, the vast majority of Americans, has the right to speak out against their hatred and bigotry,” said Ibrahim Hooper, national communications director for CAIR.
