The Sacramento Valley/Central California chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SV/CC) today welcomed felony hate crime charges filed against an Oroville man accused of threatening a mother and her two children while yelling “white power” and other racist slurs.
The charges stem from an incident that took place on August 29 at Palermo Park. Authorities say that the suspect allegedly confronted a mother and her two young children, ages 2 and 9, threatening them while shouting racial slurs and proclaiming “white power.”
“We strongly support the decision to pursue hate crime charges in this deeply disturbing incident,” said CAIR Sacramento Valley/Central California Communications Director Zaid Hisham. “No family should be terrorized in broad daylight simply because of their perceived ethnicity. We commend law enforcement authorities for taking this case seriously and urge full accountability under the law.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
