The students were removed from the classroom pending an investigation, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The organization said the students were being unfairly judged based on “racist tropes and stereotypes about Muslims and Arabs.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has organized a National Week of Action demanding the immediate release of 16-year-old U.S. citizen Mohammed Ibrahim.

“The ADL has never established a special monitor to harass any other elected official, including politicians who have actually expressed real bigotry against Jewish Americans. Singling out Mayor-elect Mamdani is an act of hypocrisy and anti-Muslim bigotry, pure and simple. We strongly condemn the ADL’s increasingly unhinged, desperate attacks on American Muslims and other advocates for Palestinian human rights, and we call on New York community leaders to do the same,” CAIR said in a statement.

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the incident. 

This heinous vandalism is not just an attack on a yeshiva — it is an assault on the principles of pluralism and religious freedom that define our nation. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors to reject hatred and insist that law enforcement and government respond with urgency, strength, and compassion,” CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said.

The Houston chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for law enforcement to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime, while praising the university’s response.

“We are deeply disturbed by this hateful act targeting Muslim students who were exercising their right to gather peacefully in worship,” Imran Ghani, Director of CAIR-Houston said. “Publicly shouting xenophobic statements and burning the Quran, our most sacred scripture, is not only an attack on the Muslim community, but also an affront to the values of respect, diversity, and inclusion. We commend the University of Houston for filing an incident report and urge law enforcement authorities to treat this incident as a possible hate crime and to ensure the safety and religious freedom of all students.”
