CAIR-MN Welcomes Charges for Man who Sent Death Threats to Minnesota Attorney for Prosecuting Racist Harassment

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN today welcomed charges against a man who reportedly sent death threats to a Minnesota city attorney for prosecuting a woman who admitted to hurling racist slurs at a child with autism at a park in April.

The original incident occurred in April in Rochester, Minnesota. Charges said the woman repeatedly called an 8-year-old Somali boy a racial slur after he took an applesauce pouch from her diaper bag. The boy’s father said he is “profoundly and visibly autistic” and “does not understand typical boundaries.” The Rochester City Attorney’s Office charged the woman with three counts of disorderly conduct in August.

A South Carolina man sent several messages to the city attorney, including one in which he threatened to “travel all the way to your f***ing state, to your f***ing city, and I will start murdering every last one of you.” The man has been charged with one felony count of threats of violence and two gross misdemeanor counts of harassment.

“We welcome the charges for these disturbing threats and thank law enforcement authorities for taking action quickly,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “With acts of political violence increasingly widespread, such threats must be taken seriously.”

He noted that CAIR-Minnesota condemned the original incident in April and called on law enforcement authorities to investigate the alleged racist harassment of a Muslim mother and child in Rochester, Minnesota, as a possible hate crime and to protect the alleged victim’s family and bystanders from retaliation.
