The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress to take immediate action to protect Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank following reports that a masked mob brutally beat an elderly Palestinian man.
The man was reportedly attacked amid ongoing violence by illegal Israeli settlers against Palestinian residents in the occupied West Bank. Human rights groups and journalists have documented a sharp rise in settler violence, often carried out with impunity and, in many cases, in the presence of Israeli security forces.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“What Israel is doing in the West Bank is a systematic campaign of displacement, intimidation and de facto annexation. Armed Israeli settlers, emboldened, enabled and protected by the Israeli government, are carrying out violent attacks against Palestinian civilians with total impunity. Homes are attacked, land is seized and communities are terrorized while Israeli forces stand by or actively assist. This violence is not incidental; it is policy-driven. Congress and President Trump can – and should – use U.S. leverage to pressure Israel to immediately end its human rights abuses and illegal settler violence by ending its occupation, upholding international law and protecting Palestinian civilians.”
CAIR has repeatedly condemned the human rights abuses, collective punishment, and ethnic cleansing carried out by Israeli forces and illegal Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Yesterday, CAIR said the United States and Muslim nations in the Middle East should take action after Israel’s latest ceasefire violations and a report by the United Nations accusing Israel of decades of “severe racial discrimination and segregation” in the West Bank equivalent to “apartheid.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
