Veronica Laizure, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Oklahoma chapter, described the outcome of the vote as disappointing, but said she did not believe it meant the project is dead.

She echoed Wimpee in saying that project organizers could go back to the drawing board and rework their proposal to address the concerns of city council members.

“As long as the process is being applied fairly to this group the same as it would be applied to any other entity or house of worship, we applaud them (city council) for taking the time to hear the residents’ thoughts,” Laizure said. “If, however, we feel that discrimination is at play and they have been successfully distracted by the Islamophobic rhetoric that unfortunately dominated this discourse, we would be very disappointed if that swayed their opinions, and we will certainly contemplate any and all advocacy that is available, including legal action.”

But the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which advocates for fair treatment of Muslims in the U.S., criticized the latest rollback as a “bigoted attack” that will send some Somalis back to a war-torn, unstable nation.

“This decision does not reflect changed conditions in Somalia,” CAIR said in a statement released jointly with its Minnesota chapter. “By dismantling protections for one of the most vulnerable Black and Muslim communities, this decision exposes an agenda rooted in exclusion, not public safety.”
