[NOTE: Eid ul-Fitr (EED-al-FITTER), or “feast of fast-breaking,” is the first of the two major Muslim holidays after the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. Many communities hold multicultural bazaars and other family activities following the prayers. The second holiday, Eid ul-Adha (EED-al-ODD-ha), comes near the end of the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca.]
In a statement, CAIR-Alabama Staff Attorney Britton O’Shields said:
“We thank Mayor Woodfin and the Birmingham City Council for this important proclamation recognizing Muslim American Heritage Month and the two Eids in the city. We encourage lawmakers across our state and the nation to follow suit and ensure the religious holidays and contributions of American Muslims and other faith communities are recognized.”
She noted that CAIR’s Maryland office recently congratulated Frederick County communities on the official proclamation of January as “Muslim American Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations were made in other states.
The City of Austin, Texas, also honored CAIR-Austin through an official proclamation.
