CAIR-AZ Action Alert: Call on Lawmakers to Oppose Bigoted Anti-Muslim Bill

The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Arizona residents of all faiths and backgrounds to urge their State Legislators and Governor Hobbs to oppose an unconstitutional, bigoted bill, SB1018, that purports to ban “sharia law” from being enforced in the state.

Working its way through the Arizona legislature, the bill passed in a Senate committee with a vote of 4-3 and is on its way to a vote of the full Senate.

In a statement, CAIR AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:

“We are Arizona’s Muslim families. We run businesses, save lives, educate children, protect our communities, and serve in the armed forces. Targeting our faith is an attack on Arizona itself. We refuse to stay silent while fearmongering is written into law, and we call on our community and allies to stand up, speak out, and demand lawmakers reject SB1018, because dignity, equality, and justice are non-negotiable.”

The resurgence of “anti-Sharia” bills nationwide is not a coincidence. It reflects a coordinated political effort to weaponize fear of Islam to for political reasons.

Last year, CAIR released a congressional briefing memo, Weaponized Islamophobia: The Return of the Anti-Sharia Hoax,  to every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, along with a companion educational document titled Sharia in American Life.”

Together, these new resources dispel misinformation about Sharia, explain its role as a moral and spiritual framework for millions of American Muslims, and expose how so-called “anti-Sharia” legislation is being used as a political weapon to inflame prejudice and attempt to silence Muslim voices calling for an end to U.S. complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and apartheid in the West Bank.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
